FIGHTING AGAINST DISCRIMINATION: FSG´S KEY LINE OF WORK

Every year since 2005, the FSG releases Annual Reports on “Discrimination and Roma Community” to raise awareness on the discrimination suffered by Roma in Spain by disseminating how discrimination operates. It includes cases of discrimination against  Roma assisted by the FSG (Click here to see the previous reports). This is not an exhaustive survey of all the cases taking place in our country, as there are many more cases of discrimination/anti-gypsyism, which are not reported to our services.

2016 EDITION WITH SPECIAL ISSUE ON ANTI-GYPSYISM

The 2016 Annual Report gathers 154 discrimination cases (see online the full report). Along with the cases of discrimination, the report also includes information regarding legislative progress in the fight against discrimination, recent jurisprudence and good practice.

In addition, part of report is devoted to analyse the specific issue ofAnti-gypsyism, its causes and nature, as  well as its impact in the daily life of Roma and in the exercise of their rights. It includes articles written by three Roma authors:  Helios F. Garcés, Valeriu Nicolae and Ramón Flores. It also highlights good practices and the headway in the fight against discrimination.

The aim is to make  anti-gypsyism more visible and call the attention of the public administrations and other the stakeholders as well as the whole society on the existences of this specific form of racism against Roma.

TOGETHER WITH THE 2016 ANNUAL REPORT, THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT HAS ALSO BEEN PUBLISHED

The 2015 report collects 194 discrimination cases (see online full report) in fields like employment, housing, media or in the access to goods and services, with particular reference to the cases of attacks to Roma families in Castellar (Jaén) and Estepa (Sevilla). Those could constitute hate crimes against the Roma community. In addition, it includes discrimination cases that took place  in other European countries and a section dedicated to the achievements in the fight against discrimination.

All together (2015 and 2016 reports) contain 348 documented discrimination cases, which reflect the constant adversities faced by the Roma to have access to employment, house rental, internships, to enter clubs, and the unfair treatment received simply for being Roma. These situations prevent the full access of Roma citizens to goods and services ( employment, education…) in equal conditions, violating their rights.
